“I would not be able to do the physically demanding work that I do for the last 20 years if not for the ongoing body maintenance I make a priority. I believe my injuries have given me the ability to relate and solve problems well beyond what a class or certification alone can do. I am grateful because I have grown over these years and excited because there is always more to learn.”

What is Structural Integration?

Structural Integration (sometimes called Rolfing) is a systematic approach to bodywork that thoroughly releases fascial tension and adhesions within the body. Chronic postural holding patterns, repetitive stress, and physical trauma can cause the connective tissue (fascia) within the body to become twisted, shortened, knotted or adhered. Structural Integration utilizes pressure and movement to lengthen and align fascial planes, release contracted muscles, and restore the natural balance of the body.

Structural Integration (developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf) can help people become free of chronic tension and pain. The Structural Integration process promotes the vitality of all the systems within the human body. Ida P. Rolf was a biochemist who studied connective tissue as a medium of energy. Her work led her to develop a method of lengthening the body in order to find balance and optimal alignment within the field of gravity. The method consists of ten sessions lasting 90 minutes that thoroughly work the structure of the body to bring length and vitality to the fascia that wraps muscles, tendons, bones, and ligaments. Shortened tight muscles are lengthened and balance is restored to over worked and underutilized musculature, creating greater freedom and efficiency of movement. Muscles that have moved out of optimal alignment are brought into their ideal position, and muscles that have become adhered through the fascial layers are differentiated from one another in order to work more efficiently and create a more balanced, lengthened and aligned body.
